Say I Love You With “Flower”

Suzannah Tacket is the genius creator of Topanga Canyon, California-based Buds & Thorns, a florist company that specializes in cannabis plant arrangements. We were both intrigued and impressed, so we dug a little deeper.

CannEpoch: How was Buds & Thorns born?

Suzannah: I began Buds and Thorns in December of 2016. I had worked in floral design for sometime already but it wasn’t until late 2016 that people really began asking for my designs specifically, and before I knew it I had a business. My husband, Holden Jagger, and his sister, Rachel Burkons, founded their cannabis-directed events company, Altered Plates, that year and they invited me to help curate the perfect experience for their clients. It was exciting and new to use cannabis in my floral designs, and since my husband cultivated his own cannabis for the events and dinners, I had more at my disposal than most other designers. I think my designs stand out because I tend to use only fresh cannabis flowers, which stand alone as exceptionally beautiful flowers.

CannEpoch: That’s the how. But what of the why?

Suzannah: I have been a cannabis user my whole adult life, so it was no surprise when I met my husband that one of the more attractive features I found in him was his appreciation for the plant as well. Floral design was in my blood and a second-nature skill, so when the two realities merged it seemed obvious and perfectly natural. I didn’t start designing with cannabis flowers ’til my husband and sister-in-law began hosting their dinner series and once I started using the new ingredient, my designs only became more complex and interesting.

CannEpoch: As a floral designer with a new business, how did you source your first customers?

Suzannah: Let’s go back a bit. I was headed towards an art history degree when I strayed from the course and began a full-time job with CBS as a production assistant on sitcoms. It was a lot of work but seemed like my people-skills and love of big productions were sending me on a fast track towards production management.

While there I stumbled upon a skill I had never fully acknowledged but always knew I had in me: floral designing. I was constantly ordering floral arrangements for green rooms, sets, dressing rooms, weekly table readings and press events.

At some point, I must have said something about the value and the ease of creating those designs and the boss said, “Ok then, you do it for cheaper!” So I did. It was a great success, but wouldn’t you know it? I got pregnant and everything changed. My husband and I did not want to leave the newborn in daycare so we had to decide who loved their profession more and considering he was a hotshot pastry sous chef at Craft Los Angeles, it was an obvious choice.

Still, during that time, I was designing florals for many different departments at CBS, including the network offices. I didn’t know it then but it wouldn’t be long after I gave up that job and my daughter was a-year-and-a-half-old until I was ready to pursue my new found passion. I worked as a designer in a mall flower shop, and then with an independent designer on occasional events. Eventually, I had my second child and once again stepped away, but this time when I came back to design, it was for myself and my family.

A floral design from, Buds and Thorns, is a gift of art and stands above the standard designs we often see in the business. The cannabis flower elevates the experience of beauty and natural decadence. They truly are beyond compare.

CannEpoch: What should customers expect when ordering an arrangement from Buds & Thorns?

Suzannah: A unique design that uses out-the-ordinary ingredients including, but not limited to, cannabis. I love to forage in the mountains of Topanga and though I am very thoughtful to only take a little of each wild plant I find, I spend hours searching and discovering beautiful gems in my backyard which provides a lot. I love to use at least three textures per design and unexpected color choices and combinations are one of my signatures. My art history background left a deep impression on me and the images of the Dutch masters are rarely far from my mind when I make creative choices.

CannEpoch: Do you deliver?

Suzannah: Yes, we offer delivery throughout Los Angeles.
